The Images We Create

As we travel through life, we create images from the inputs around us. On one level this is an obvious point. How many of us realize that we can shift our reactions?

We can grow more skillful at noticing the images in our heads and if not towards our upliftment, shifting them. It can feel like what we envision is just “the truth” that is outside us. But no, in fact we create the image, we can choose our perception and related emotional reactions to the stimulus.

Some Illustrations

1. Body Image

When Lorraine was a pre-teen, she had enthusiasm for the horse in gymnastics. She loved the forward roll over that piece of equipment.

One day she went over and landed with a plop. She does not remember what the teacher who was spotting said but she never used that piece again.

In her mind she was majorly overweight, not athletic, awkward and in all sports, hopeless. With that self- image she had no confidence, felt shamed and went off back to her studies where she excelled.

If she had had an inner picture of a resilient young woman, a bit plumb perhaps, but loaded with potential for building skills, she would have been more likely to persist.

2. Lyme disease

Some contract Lyme disease and read about the numerous symptoms and ill effects. There are those who get frightened by all the negative possibilities and start to picture their body with those reactions.

Jalmina refused to read all that. After a few weeks of experiencing various discomforts, one morning in a meditation she received a prayer. It went like this:

The Source Energy that Aligned the Planets and Keeps them in their Orbit

The Divine Power that Infuses Life into Every Leaf on Every Tree

The Force that Creates Every Creature that Walks this Earth

That Force Courses through MY veins,

Is that Force of Good daunted by some nasty (lyme) spirochetes Ha!

In her quiet time, when she said this (usually) aloud, our heroine would feel a rush of fresh energy even when fatigued.

Though feeling low energy and a bit depressed, the power of this image was visceral!

3. Difficulty in Walking

Rochelle experienced periodic swelling in her legs and during the worst of the episode walked with irregular gait. When it was not an undue strain, still she walked for her exercise.

What did she hold in her mind while trekking along? She envisioned herself at ease, confident, taking strides that were playful, even experimenting with a strut or dance steps.

She could call up lively and reach for feeling as good as she can. Appreciating the sunshine.

Did that image eliminate the condition in two days? No it did not. However, she did enjoy her time as her body healed and in several weeks with some supplements and herbal treatments she returned to normal.

The image she held kept her feeling upbeat. Therefore the suffering from this condition was dramatically reduced and its duration less relevant.

A Story of Self Loving

Many of us on the growth path want to grow in self-loving. Some offer, “This is the hardest realm of all.” How the heck do you do it? The habits of self-shaming seem so strong.

We can do it!  Allowing the change to progress bit by bit. We decide we will shift.

How to start? Isn’t it great when we begin to notice all of a sudden, we feel quite poorly! Yes really, we start to recognize that some incident has triggered the shaming habit.

Of great assistance is feeling good more and more. More commenting on what is going well. More taking stock of the many “coincidences” that work well for you.

We get more experience of feeling good about ourselves. Positive in itself and then – wow—we can more easily perceive that we just fell in a shamed rut.

Isn’t it great to let go of habituated responses bit by bit!

Our reactions show us what is going on inside ourselves—point out that inner material we might call “unconscious.”

Therefore, when we react it is not “bad” – not at all.

Gradually we awaken to when our shame is aroused. So good to allow ourselves the deep knowing – we are completely ok right now. The shine of our beings remains strong as we clear outdated mental hygiene.

We are enriched and grow as we notice, shift, and let go again. Not victims of our acculturation, we return to opening to the bounty and beauty of what power we do wield over ourselves.

Illuminating the Point

Carla asked a friend to come assist her with her storage unit. With cunning this smart gal had chosen her assistant carefully. This man knew she had stored things for many years and did not offer commentary. She accepted his organizing know how and physical strength and proceeded.

Because she had been criticized harshly in her past for both accumulating her “treasures” and not sorting and discarding enough, she could handle the focus on this task for a chunk of hours and then needed rest.

On her journey of growth Carla got a vision of what she wanted for herself regarding these valued keepsakes and household materials. She wanted ease, self acceptance and strength.

In her imagination, C decided to support herself in a way she had not yet experienced. Largely she was the one who put herself through college, got her first car and apartment and found her own way. She got scholarships, worked and figured out her budget.

With regard to this storage unit, our heroine decided that she  would give herself the space to have these things just as long as she wanted to own them. In that decision she took any pressure off herself: she declared she would not be shamed for a slower release process than some have.

Further, in all areas of her life, this star practiced appreciating her life throughout her day, thereby building both her self esteem and health. David Perlmutter author of many books on health and longevity says the most important focus for health is gratitude. Wow persisting in this positive perception produced major pay off. Carla’s shaming reactions in many topics melted away to a rare reaction. 😊

Wanting Praise

We love to receive praise from our loved ones, our bosses, our professional societies and more. Gosh that feels good, that recognition. What power do we wield when we offer it to ourselves?

Please Read this Story

Sally enjoyed a good relationship with her brother, Roy. They could enjoy passionate discussions involving their spirituality, inner struggles and discoveries. Sally was older and had been earnest in her pursuit of growth over many years and sometimes she was able to provide useful leadership.

Roy’s daily practice involved thinking and writing for an hour every morning. He admitted on occasion he felt unhappy in his life and at times felt discouraged in his progress.

Emerging Selves, 16 x 20, $475

In their conversation much of the time, Sally listened to Roy’s awareness and often frustrations. Sometimes she shared some of her insights. As the years went by, she realized that Roy felt badly about a number of aspects of himself. His notes were peppered with some criticisms of his dear self. Also he did not share a commitment to noticing his thoughts and realizing his creative power with them. To stay in harmony with him, she focused herself on primarily listening and appreciating the parts that felt good for him and that he could appreciate. She could cheer him on when he saw progress.

On her path unfolding, Sally became awake to how much she longed for her brother’s belief in her. He stayed kindly for sure, and mostly reported his story.  He was less interested in her approaches, tips and setbacks.

What did she do?

She turned into herself. Those spiritual leaders she followed recommend putting primary focus on each of our connection with Source Energy, with tuning into our own Divine Spark, our own inner guidance. They recommend self-appreciation and knowing more and more our own value. True enough, receiving primarily in that way become more and more satisfying.

Over many years Sally chose more and more to look to her own divinity for validation of her value. Our heroine felt better and better about herself. She accepted and appreciated Roy on his path. S took responsibility for her own self esteem. And, she had an insight one day that a person such a Roy, who did not love himself could not love her. “Oh it’s nothing personal,” said our dear protagonist, “It has not one thing to do with me.”

At the end of 2021 the Roy family sends a box of offered treasures to S the sister. Included was a holiday card with a note. Roy wrote about 10 appreciations of his dear sibling this year. Sally read the missive and wept. This brother now articulated many positive attributes and things Sally had longed to hear for years.

Soon afterwards he wrote about his reaction to a spiritual book she’d sent as a gift R explained with enthusiasm that he had had a break through. He realized the preeminence of each moment and he can see the beauty there. And that’s all he has to do.

Yes Sally wanted to be told from an outside other that she is precious, loveable and with enormous value. And she had the power to let this love in all with her own Source Connection.

When her brother felt his own value, he could then honor it in her.

Take Away:

Allow our own dear self to feel the outpouring of love from Source Connection.

Love the others wherever they are in their process of unfolding.

Inner Work for Scary Diagnosis

When we, family member, or close friend receives a scary diagnosis, we feel our fear. On a path of empowerment, what thoughts can we reach for to assist us to feel better? What can we appreciate? Here are some suggestions that may soothe.

Inspiring Stories of Recovery

Sweet Marsh, 8 x 10, SOLD

We can take heart from Lou Ellen’s journey with a potentially deadly form of lymphoma. She informed the oncologist she intended to come see him only for his testing. She crafted a treatment plan of natural alternatives to chemotherapy and radiation, approaches she felt were right for her. After the research, her intuition led her to choices for therapies, diets and more. The journey lasted over two years and now that dear one has celebrated 12 years cancer free after test results showing no evidence of recurrence.

Books like Dying to Be Me,[1] and God in the ICU,[2]and Radical Remissions[3] are filled with accounts of miraculous healings and return to wholeness. Isn’t it wonderful that we can flood our awareness with such tales that show us infinite potential for recovery and hope.

Shift attitudes to more optimistic ones

When fear runs in us, we can observe in ourselves what thoughts are fueling it. When we pause, we may note we believe what doctors say is guaranteed to happen. Oh Wait! Those physicians do their best but we maintain sovereignty over our own selves. I can increase my focus on thriving.

Strengths To Develop

We build inner muscles as we intensify our focus on an intention. It is remarkable how much we learn ourselves and our abilities.

What a great opportunity to practice new discipline of healthful eating and meditation. We might nap more, exercise more effectively. We certainly practice resilience in ways never before imagined.

With Cara, she stuck to a food plan like never before. She took on more careful self-care than she ever thought possible. She experienced energy healers and felt how soothing were their ministrations.

We may face less activity than previously lived and more self love than we ever envisioned.

Finding Faith

We feel resonance with Forces of Good.  We find a deeper comfort in expressions that before were only words:

Source has my back.

Well Being Pours Down

I surrender

Rest in the arms of an Angel

Seeing The Loved One As Whole Now

These loved ones were designed as perfect humans, whole and complete. Focusing there we feel transformed as the calming comes over our nervous system.

How wonderful to appreciate the helpers along the way, the moments of pristine clarity, the exquisite beauty of a tree or flower.  We offer our dear mind some constructive occupation instead of running scenes of unwanted.

Building the Capacity for Self Love

So many of us know that when we love ourselves more and more we increase our ability to shape our lives toward more of what we desire.

How to Begin?

Each day we can appreciate what we can around us. As we get more and more accustomed to this, create a new habit, we can add appreciating some aspects of ourselves.

It is ok for these steps to take as long as they take. As we feel into this journey, we may notice how good we feel as we appreciate. Very rewarding—and more and more fun!

On this road, some may notice the good things that show up even after an unwanted event occurred. Good things flow from all experiences.

Example

Layla backed into her landlord’s car in the driveway one spring day. “Oh my God,” she cried, “What have I done? What an idiot I am!” This gal went about the business of all the reporting about it, took responsibility and her insurance covered the repairs.

Inside herself she felt terrible. But she had been doing this inner work for awhile and as she could, she reached for thoughts that felt better.

No she did not want to suffer on and on. Our star was able to see that the event was over in a flash. This woman did not want to rerun the horror and she did not choose to continue to pour self-blame on herself. 

Soon Layla was able to choose to accept this error. Many reminded her that others have done such a deed. That week her yoga partner told her about the occasion that she backed into her husband’s truck in her own driveway. Alas, she saw the wisdom of making it ok that L had erred. It was ok. And Wow accepting herself as an evolving human felt so much better than self-shaming.

If we practice, we get better at switching to better feeling. As we are aware and want to grow, we can do this more and more.

As Layla looks back at this incident, our heroine sees how she got valuable practice out of experiencing this. She grew in her self-acceptance.

Yes, we can discover Good coming out of these blips! We are aware, we find, we grow!

We Create Our Own Reality

Some of us cringe away from the thought that we create our own reality. It is not that we don’t want a wonderful life: far from it! Sure, in theory we want to use our personal power but how can we feel ok about all the kinds of things that can show up in our lives?

It scares us off from taking power if we anticipate having to face that we screwed up so many opportunities, so much unwanted that fell onto our life path. We say, “Oh my goodness, how could I take responsibility for that—I would feel so much guilt! What if I CAUSED a serious occurrence? What if my daughter suffered a mental illness, my mother had cancer, or I earned low wages? Then I would feel so blamed and maligned. The feelings of shame would drown me! Oh dear too much to bear.”

If we want to stand tall in the creating ability we have, we tune with greater attention to where we place our focus. We are able to marshal our energies even as some unwanted events are unfolding.

As we practice, we learn to seek the good in the circumstance and find it.

Example

One woman, Nancy, reached to get better at this focusing. One rainy day our star turned into a small awkward parking lot, traveling too fast. A car was standing idle in the entrance and N could not stop in time. She hit the car. There was a crash, with much damage to the vehicles.

Nancy, very shaken, and felt the pull to begin calling herself terrible names in her head. She felt sick, rallied to make the requisite calls. In about 20 minutes, this heroine noticed that others treated her with kindness. The policemen were considerate; the nearby shop keeper invited her inside to get out of the rain to make needed calls. They offered her water.

It was a significant event, and she had the power to feel human contact around her.

If we choose an aware path, we gain strength from everything that shows up. We do look for the good and find it in all experiences.

Capacity Building

Yes, we feel stronger in shaping our lives when we love and trust ourselves. So many of us experienced much criticism and shaming in our upbringing.. Those who feel called to a powerful stance can develop new habits of thought to accept ourselves.

If we decide we want to do so, each of us can reclaim good feeling with step-by-step progress.

Not Taking it Personally

Some of us at one time may have thought less of ourselves because we were not getting attention from another. We create something we think is wonderful, and another ignores us.

Oh my! Did we take on the assumption, perhaps unconsciously, that our products have no merit? Did we start to think only if we had produced value would we get attention?

If you are holding your self esteem to that measure, please take another look as you read the following.

The Violinist

The story goes that the Washington Post financed a social experiment. The plan called for a renowned violinist to play music in a subway station for an hour. The violinist had a hat out. Some folk going by threw something in the hat.  A few people stopped to listen for a couple of minutes.

A few times children stopped to listen but not for long. The mothers needed to get on with things and pulled them along to their destinations. The player did get some collections. He attracted $32.

The night before this fellow had performed in a major concert hall where patrons paid $100 per seat. The compositions were among the most challenging for this instrument, one valued at $3M. And his violin was the finest that money could buy.

The experiment showed that people do not stop to smell the roses: they don’t take the time to enjoy the beauty around them. Yes we can all see that!.

And more

Undoubtedly this violinist had plenty of confidence. The Post paid him well and then the musician moved on to rehearse for the next concert hall gig.

Let’s take a look at those of us more fledgling in our endeavors.

We might feel discouraged if we do not get appreciation for what we have produced. Now let’s put those self-deprecating thoughts juxtaposed with the crowd in the subway. Did it mean anything about the quality of the art when the worker bees rushed by? No!

Have we thought that we can rely on the judgment of others to tell us if we produce something of value? Like, “Surely someone would notice me and cheer me on.”

Let’s boot out this line of assessing ourselves! Let’s built our own inner feedback. Tune in and feel what fuels the creation.

Instead, feel into the joy that we feel creating what calls us. Yes! The folks metaphorically rushing by us are totally irrelevant. Anyone who throws a “downer” our way is in the midst of passing a chance to smell the roses.

To Heal Body; Focus on Attitude

We have all experienced parts of our body not functioning as designed to operate.  To return to full health we must address not only the body but mind and spirit.

Louise Hay, a leader in the self-help movement, metaphysical teacher, and founder of a publishing house to foster such work, encouraged us to shift our thinking to facilitate healing of bodily conditions. Yes, we use a variety of medicines, herbs, supplements along with Jin Shin Jyutsu and other options in energy medicine. Here we awaken to our thinking power to assist us further. We know ourselves to be already whole, breathe in the Well Being pouring into us at all times. Isn’t it wonderful to bask in images of Ease.

Two Illustrations

  1. Catherine Ponder

In 1966 Catherine Ponder published her book The Dynamic Laws of Healing.[2]  Ahead of its time, the work is filled with many stories of dramatic healing from a shift in attitude.

In one account a woman who had failed to get relief from her doctors came for a session. After listening to the client’s long list of woes, the author Ponder asks the woman to tell her something that was currently going well with her. At first this one seeking help could not think of anything.

Catherine persisted pointing out that this dear one had walked into her office, did not live in her bed and appeared to see, hear, smell, taste and touch.  The client responded after some contemplation– her right little finger was perfect.

The counselor told the distressed person to go home and focus on the perfection of her little finger, to praise its health, to give thanks for Life and refuse to think of her ills. In three days the patient returned and felt better in her whole hand.  The client continued to see Catherine and before too long the list of healthy parts grew and grew.[3]

  1. Roxanne’s Success

Roxanne sought Jin Shin Jyutsu[4] with two bodily conditions to address: a type of cancer and a blood condition.  R had been acculturated to focus in on what was not going well (like so many of us). Seeing physicians often she took their grim tones and dire predictions to heart. She focused on being a sick person.

In the hands-on art of JSJ students are trained to view a client as already whole, not a pile of disharmonies. Roxanne chatted while she was receiving her hands-on treatment, soaking up the relaxation and the words and attitude of the practitioner.

Our heroine absorbed the message that she was mostly well. Her being was so much more than her diagnoses, and her contribution vaster than her current job. Roxanne loved this revelation and practiced it.

Early on R reported on her check up with the blood doctor:  the doctor was surprised to see her improved condition—since that physician had predicted rapid deterioration.

This client kept with these JSJ sessions. After a year or so she went into remission from the cancer. Rox knew deep down her change of attitude “Mostly well: Already Whole” had made an enormous contribution to the course of her condition. Our star has stayed well for years and continues to focus on wellness!

Thoughts to Remember

A. We have awesome power available to use for bringing ourselves back to balance: align our inner state to that of love, peacefulness and joy. Let’s bask in this!

B. We are wise to notice on what our attention is focused. Is it a list of complaints and worries? Instead, we can shift to a vision of the able bodied, harmonious state of our being that we prefer. We can notice all the myriad positive developments all around us.

Noticing Fear as Empowerment

Each day we are becoming more aware of the feelings and thoughts that arise in us. As we heighten our awareness of our feelings, we can wield a new level of power.

When we become concerned or fearful, many of us have the habit to DO SOMETHING. Adrenaline pours into our bloodstream and we feel a drive to address this threat.

When we feel fear, we fill our minds with some image that fuels the fright, definitely something unwanted. If we create the new skill of taking a pause, if we can say to ourselves, “Wow this is fear. What do I think will happen?” We get information about what unwanted we are MAKING UP or projecting.

With the pause, we then have the opportunity to envision what we DO Want and to invent a different scenario than that threatening picture. How do we get to wanted? We have been learning what to do

Reach for feeling better and keep picturing what we DO WANT.

Perhaps some illustrations of how a person can use this life changing capacity.

Example #1

Timothy rented a place to live. With permission from the landlord he had laid out some money to fund a repair. This man wanted to see his money compensated promptly.

The owner suffered a serious health condition. The daughter helping her was inexperienced at carrying out all the responsibilities associated with the owned properties. Then the son of the landperson (brother to the daughter) experienced a hospitalization from a significant accident.

Tim felt unheard and discounted, his message lost in that family’s problems. This man wanted his money back! He felt more and more concern.

At first T envisioned losing money and suffering. That mental picture stoked his fear. In this man a voice cried, “I have to act to take care of myself!”

Here another way to perceive this:

Surrounding this, there are infinite possibilities of outcomes. Many of us have been trained to let these emotions run and then dictate our responses.  New suggestion: This hero could take a pause.

Here is what Tim tried. He declared to himself, “Wait a minute: I want to get clear what I DO WANT. I can imagine full compensation as the family gets back on their feet. The son will come home, the owner/mother will feel better and clearer. The daughter follows the instructions of the experienced, calmer lead.”

This dear man can use his energy to hold that vision. He can get in tune with the flow of the Universe. He need not push because he has heightened emotion with more phone calls and letters.

Timothy did wait and let some time pass. Then the owner felt improved health and mood. He interacted with her and then he easily made his points and received the agreement and cooperation he wanted.

Example #2

Lottie knew that Windows 11 upgrade was available on her computer. This gal had not realized that one day Windows would put up a screen, blocking all others, and inform her she must choose to download it now or decline the upgrade altogether.

Yes, the way Microsoft took over startled and concerned her. In her mind this new software might prevent her from using her system to teach an online class that was on her schedule for 12 hours hence.

In that concern our star fueled an upset and without consciously realizing, began out picturing inconvenient and troubling outcomes from this upgrade.

With assistance from tech friends, she receive advice to let it download and the installation phase would come later. This understanding allowed her to get a good night’s sleep in those intervening hours.

In the morning Lottie was given the option to postpone installing the new software and she chose a time and date a day later. This meant she was fine to teach her class.

The mental image of problems and obstacles for the online class did not materialize.

This dear woman awoke to realizing  how she had been afraid and with her imagination projected a scenario she did not at all want. Now she exercised the option to picture what she did want if she took that power. The evening before, she had let her fear sweep her up and make undesired and unconscious predictions.

Summation

We can play with this and see what changes we can make as we live our days. We might say, “Oh I am feeling an uncomfortable worry. What if I tuned back into Well Being and instead put focus on what I prefer. Let’s make up what I would rather see.”

What if we notice our arousal (concern, fear, and the like) first only as a indicator? We can become aware and take a breath. The discernment becomes a tool to fuel our imagination for more wanted scenarios?When we feel concerned, we are envisioning some future outcome, activity, that we don’t want. What if we are clued in that this is an opportunity to picture what we DO want instead?

Appreciating a Painful Episode

Occasionally, we might experience a symptom in the body that we don’t prefer. Some of us know that the conditions that show up mean something about our state of mind.

Those taking responsibility for what arises may want to shift some mental habits. In the past did we blame some outside influence for this kind of thing? There are those among us who might readily blame themselves for some inattention, mistake or failed affirmation in the face of unwanted aches, pains or the like.

When we understand how the laws of the universe operate, we can move past any blame. We can accept what we have attracted including any discomfort. What if we flowed with this experience? We can skip a dramatic story and heightened emotions, not angry, not remorseful, not panicky, not afraid.  Can we pause and be still with what is presenting? We can stay present and flow with life.

A Story from Susan

Susan thinks to herself, “Oh look, this leg is swollen. I think this is more swollen and sorer than yesterday. Hmm. I will breathe into it.”

Susan recalls, “Under similar circumstances in the past, I did not recall in that first second what my protocols or remedies are. Breathe. I do know I don’t prefer this condition.”

Our star continues, “I want to get my mind on something I do want.  Ok I admit I have had my mind on what I don’t want quite a bit for at least a month. I have been unhappy about this dating relationship.”

She gets back into present time and does the tasks she can in the day.

At one point this dear woman remembers, “Pain means that help is on the way. Wow.

My cells are all attuned to Well- Being and seeking help there. They want the harmony of the Good pouring down and around.

Hunch about the Cause: Buried unwanted feelings seeking expression

Susan was letting herself know her deeper feelings as the episode unfolded.

She was driving and doing errands, stopped at a streetlight. She went to offer soothing words to her sore leg in that moment. Surprising herself, tears just burst forth. There she was at a traffic light. Wow she tapped into the deeper feelings and they were ready for expression. It lasted not even two minutes. Some relief though!

In her quiet time in the morning, she flowed from readings, to guided meditations, to some journaling, pulling a card. Which was it? Not sure.

It came to her to put on “5o ways to leave your lover” on youtube. So up she got to her feet, listened, sang a long and danced.

She took a yoga class. Some of the poses brought up some pain. It did not stay painful as she moved along from position to position. The class was designed to be relaxing on a deeper level. Sure enough, as she lay in the final pose, she found tears coming up. (Fortunately, she was online and was “muted”.)  when she sat up to share at the end, she felt quite a good chunk better, calmer and no pain at that moment. She walked with more ease.

Take away points:

  1. Pain? Be on notice to be extra kind to oneself
  2. Making it ok to have a physical hurt is so much easier than being very upset and blaming with it.
  3. Facing the deeper feelings behind a hurt may take some time and attention. Allow it to take as long as it takes. Accept this internal journey.
  4. Make note of the lessons popping up from experience of the unwanted. Hey I know I want more of deeper connection, shared interests, shared fun….
  5. Appreciating the richness of my life, the new awarenesses.

We can make falling down in the metaphorical mud easier and richer. Let’s go for it! Susan is glad she is learning how to experience, learn, feel and flow!
